“Women still represent majority of the population” Stats SA

With the statistics on population being reported by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), it is said according to the 2022 Mid-year Population Estimates (MYPE) that of the 60.6 million people recorded in South Africa, women still represent a big number.

“31.0 million (51.1%) were females. Gauteng comprised the largest share of the female population, with approximately 8.1 million people (26.0%) living in the province. KwaZulu Natal had the second largest female population in South Africa, with an 6.0 million people (19.0%) living in this province.”

Men represent 48.9% in the population.

Northern Cape still remains the province with the smallest share of the population of 661 000, translating to 2.1%.

But, with women being the majority in the country, they still represented less than 50% of household heads. Only 42.1% of households were led by women in 2021.

In the same line, Stats SA also reported that Gauteng had a large number of female headed households in 2022 by 33.9%, 1.8 million.

It was followed by KZN with 1.5 million.

Life expectancy at birth for 2021 was estimated at 59,3 years for males and 64,6 years for females. The infant mortality rate for 2021 is estimated at 24,1 per 1 000 live births.
