Burundian born player Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana’s hat-trick this past Sunday against Stellenbosch FC rubbed many football fanatics the wrong way.

Questions arose on whether referee Thato Maruping was right or not for awarding back to back penalties that went Amakhosi’s way and converted to goals. Former FIFA referee Ace Ngcobo backed Maruping saying he was definitely correct in awarding those penalties according to FIFA rules.

He said it is very much unfortunate that tripping is an offence in football rules and it works in your disadvantage if it’s in your box, in that case a penalty will have to be awarded unfortunately.

It is said that Caleb Bimenyimana is the first player to score a hattrick of penalties in the PSL Era, since its formation in 1996-97.
