Regional Court in Tshwane North has handed down hefty ten (10) years imprisonment for a 57 years old woman for stealing two leggings worth R 798.40.

Desiree Williams who is not new to the court system went to Cotton-On Retail in Montana on October 25, 2021 where she took the said items into a fitting room with her. But later she came out of the room without the items and attempted to leave the retail store.

This is according to NPA Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana who said that seeing that she was leaving the store, the store manager then called her to the retail’s office and showed her the CCTV of her taking the items into the fitting room.

“The store manager stopped her and called her to the back office and searched her bag. The items were found and police were called and Williams was arrested and has been in custody since.”

It was also discovered in court through the prosecutor, Rabia Ebrahim that Williams committed the same offence in 1981, and surprisingly so, she still finds herself decades later on the wrong side of the law with the same offence.

Ebrahim also told the court that Williams has 34 previous convictions for theft, 29 of those are older than 10 years while 5 are between 2011 and 2020 and she is still awaiting trial for 31 pending cases.

She was given 10 years direct imprisonment.
