Police have confirmed the arrest of a woman who faked her own abduction to extort money from her husband who owns several businesses in Phoenix, Durban.
A video supposedly recorded by the kidnappers was sent to the husband where the woman is seen and heard saying her alleged kidnappers are demanding a ransom of R 2million in exchange for her release.
According to the incident report by the police, the ransom was later reduced to R400 000 following a negotiation.
The police then followed the lead and made their way to the place where she was allegedly held hostage, upon arrival, they found the woman in a Bed and Breakfast room booked under a different name together with jewellery she initially alleged that it was stolen.
She was arrested and the husband further reported that this was not the first time something of this nature has occurred.
She was allegedly kidnapped in 2021 and later on dropped off at police station after paying a ransom of R 30 000 but the matter was not reported.
She is facing perjury charges.
