As disturbing scenes of violence and looting continue to take place in some parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal, members of Phoenix in KZN which is predominantly Indian decided to take matters in their hands to protect what is left of theirs.

But worryingly so, what initially started as people protecting their properties and investments has quickly spiraled into a racial tension.

Various security companies in the area vowed to protect their properties.

As of this past Sunday, there were reports of white people and Indians targeting African people in the area.

The tensions caught Police Minister Bheki Cele’s attention and he called for people to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

Authorities have reported several racially motivated attacks in areas such as Phoenix, Chatsworth and parts of Pietermaritzburg.

Minister Cele also called on people to work hand in hand with the authorities instead of working by themselves because they are not well trained.

Videos of African people being assaulted by Indians and white started making rounds on social with some of them being shot. Some of the people supposedly staying in the areas also took videos of themselves vowing to do whatever it takes to protect their properties.
