Three suspects arrested for coal theft at Majuba Power Station

Three suspects aged between 30 and 37 years were arrested and released on R 2000 bail for allegedly defrauding Majuba Power Station of R 27 000.

It is alleged that the driver of a truck, 31 years old Brian Mandizvidze, loaded coal from NCC mine to deliver at Majuba Power Station. Instead of delivering the coal to Majuba Power station, the driver diverted to an illegal coal yard where they off-loaded the coal .

Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said that two bridge operators who were also involved, Nompumelelo Ngwenya (37) and Tshepang Phatswane (30) issued weigh bridge slips as if the coal was delivered, whereas in actual fact, it was not.

The fraudulent act saw the Power Station suffering a loss of R 27 000.

The matter was reported to the Hawks which conducted a sting operation, and to the trio was arrested on Thursday, 21 September 2023, and appeared in court on the same day.

They were released on R2000 bail by the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court pending further investigations and pre-trial on 6th October, 2023.
