The 26 years old born Jo-Anne Van Dyk says she went through a lot to winning a silver medal in javelin, which became sixth medal for Team South Africa at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Van Dyk said she had to put up the little cents she had because did not have any financial backing from government on the road to this yearβs Olympics. Which is her second Olympics.
A qualified dietician by profession said that she enjoyed all the support from her family who believed in her.
Van Dyk had attended her first Olympics in Tokyo and there she was eliminated in qualifying with a best of 57.69m. Here, she was three years older, three years wiser and a different athlete entering the prime of her career.
Seeing that she did not receive any support from the government, Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton Mckenzie said this was about to change. Gone are the days where athletes who raise the South African flag up high struggle when there is enough money and resources to support them.
