Road accident claims at least 18 lifes

Officials in KZN have confirmed that they are investigating the cause of a horrific motor vehicle accident which claimed at least eighteen people in a minibus taxi, truck and light motor vehicle at Van Reenen’s Pass in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The accident happened between 8:30pm and 9pm on Monday along the N3 toll route from KZN to Gauteng.

While the road is now open for use, the N3 was forced to be temporarily closed.Officials say they believe this could be due to bad weather conditions that have been pouring since late December.

MEC of Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said the department is distraught over the deaths of the passengers.

“We wish to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have requested a comprehensive report from our dedicated RTI team. We issued a statement that since last night, we have noticed an increase in road accidents along the N3, N2 and other routes as a result of heavy rainfall.”
