Minister Mbalula Relaxes Public Transport Lockdown Operating Hours Ahead of Sassa Day

Having heard cries from some Sassa beneficiaries and taxi industry to the minister of road and transport Fikile Mbalula, he decided to relax restrictions for public transport to operate.

Currently as it stands public transport operators are only allowed to operate between 5am & 9am and later on at 4pm & 8pm.

Mbalula said after thorough consultation with social development minister Zulu, he has decided to relax the restrictions and allow taxi operators to operate longer hours.

“Effective from tomorrow, 30 March 2020 until Friday, 3 April 2020, buses and taxis will be permitted to operate from 05:00 until 20:00 in order to cater to the transportation needs of society’s most vulnerable.”

“The exercise of social distance by all those using public transport must be observed and enforced.”

Minister Mbalula further added that recipients using public transport are required to carry their ID and sassa cards in order to help officials on the road to monitor the whole process.
