Home Affairs official who was arrested for issuing birth certificates to foreign nationals released on bail

Home Affairs official Muntu Edwell Monareng who was arrested on allegations of issuing birth certificates to foreign nationals was released on R3000 bail after making an appearance at eMalahleni Magistrate Court on Thursday.

His arrest follows a thorough investigations by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation who also apprehended him on Wednesday for the said alleged corruption.

The Hawks in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, Kwa-Zulu Natal Crime Intelligence, Middelburg Counter Narcotics and Crime Intelligence Technical Support Unit arrested Monareng after the department detected irregularities in the issuing of birth certificates to foreign nationals during an internal inspection in January 2020.

Spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgopodi said that an internal investigation was then instituted and Monareng allegedly tried to interfere with the investigations by approaching a Home Affairs investigator and offered him money to stop the investigation against


The investigator then reported the matter to his superiors who in turn approached the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation to investigate the matter.

“On Wednesday a multi-disciplinary operation was conducted and the suspect was arrested immediately after handing over a R13 000 gratification to the Home Affairs investigator.”

“During the operation the team managed to seize identity documents, a sizable amount of cash and other items.”

The 38 years old Monareng is expected to be back in the same court on 09 October 2020 pending further investigations.
