Court appearance today of four (4) suspects including a police officer involved in a robbery of two people.
The incident is said to have occurred in the early evening hours on February 9 at around 18:45 when the complainant was walking his father on M19 Athol road in Pietermaritzburg when a car occupied by several appeared behind them under the disguise of asking for directions.
The said car allegedly stopped and did ask for directions to Reservoir Hills. The victim said as they were busy giving directions, a man came from the backseat with a firearm and pickpocketed the victims.
Police Spokesperson in the area Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that the suspects fled the scene after robbing them of their belongings.
“The victims were pickpocketed and they were robbed of their cellphones and cash. The victims saw a police van from the K9 Unit that was nearby and alerted the police officers. Police immediately responded and chased the suspects.”
“The vehicle was intercepted and a search was conducted. The cash and two cellphones were found under the seat of the vehicle.”
“The firearm used was also found with 15 rounds of ammunition. Four suspects were placed under arrest for robbery. Among the arrested suspects was a police officer stationed at Malvern SAPS” said Mbele.
The suspects are due to make a court appearance at Pinetown Magistrates Court today.
