While it might not be easy for officials in the security cluster to admit that the July unrest that occurred in South Africa 2021 caught them while napping, it seems some of them are slowly admitting fault in some instances that perhaps even our intelligence is not on high alert as it should be.

Many of these weaknesses in our security cluster where outlined during a commission held conducted by the Human Rights Commission for the past week.

Defense Minister Mme Thandi Modise is the latest to admit that more needs to be done to preserve the sovereignty of the country.

Minister Modise during a justice, crime prevention and security cluster’s effectiveness press conference. This is after several serious crime incidents that occurred during July unrest.

She also added it is sometimes not easy for our law enforcement agencies mostly police to do their job in fear of being called xenophobic because there is a trend of certain criminal acts being conducted by foreign nationals.

She said police often find themselves having to be way too careful.

“I have no problem with the police keeping mum about the nationalities of offenders but I think sometimes we are too shy to say to people who cross our borders — both legally and illegally, who reside among us and do not respect our laws, traditions and cultures, that we are fed up. That does not make us xenophobic,” Modise said.

Mme Modise commended police officers who continue to do their job, hard as it is sometimes and said it is not wrong for police officers to ask people of their nationality at the crime scene.

It was later on discovered that 20 out those 25 where Zimbabweans.

The Minister’s comments sparked outrage from certain citizens who said that it took them long to finally agree to this utterances.
