An almost two decades long battle about who is the rightful heir in the Bakgatla Ba Seabe Traditional Council in Seabe, outskirts of Mpumalanga finally came to an end following a commission report released by Mpumalanga Cogta MEC which confirmed Chief Edward Phopolo Chaane as the rightful Chief for the Bakgatla Ba Seabe.

This follows a reign of the dethroned Chief Steve Makwe Chaane whom is said to have unduly benefited chieftaincy that was allegedly not blessed by the Council since 2001 when he was coronated as the then chief.

It is said Makwe took over from the acting chief following the death of then Chief Botlholo Chaane.

Speaking in attendance of the coronation ceremony of Chief E.P Chaane was MEC Ms Busisiwe Shiba who confirmed the incumbent as the new chief of Bakgatla Ba Seabe following years of disputes and commission that was questioning the predecessors legitimacy.

“We have noted dissatisfaction from the predecessor of the outcome that led us to where we are today but people need to understand that all due processes where followed and proper investigations were conducted for us to come to the conclusion that Chief E.P Chaane is the rightful heir” said Shiba.

When asked if she is certain that there won’t be any further disputes or court cases questioning the coronation, she said she cannot pre-empt what is to come but she is certain that her department and predecessor did proper investigations.
