As learners and teachers make their way to classes after a week long break for 2021 first term, Department of Basic Education (DBE) says it is ready to welcome back both parties for the second term.
While still taking safety precautions in Covid-19 times, DBE says they might consider full time teaching seeing that learners more especially in the primary level seems to be getting left behind with the curriculum.
This was echoed by the department’s Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga who said they are said to have discussions with stakeholders later this week.
“The Department of Basic Education is ready to welcome learners and teachers back to school for the start of the second term. We are happy that things have gone well and that learners are going back to school but at the same time we want learners to continue to adhere to the health and safety regulations that are in place.”
“The Department is currently investigating the possibility of returning all learners at a primary level due to the learning losses suffered as a direct result of the a coronavirus pandemic. The proposal is now being considered at the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINT) where the Department has delivered a presentation at the relevant work streams” said Mhlanga.
He also added that proper announcement will be made in due as Council for Education Ministers is set to meet later this week.
