23 years old man gets two life terms plus 84 years in prison on numerous rape counts

The High Court in the Eastern Cape Division, Grahamstown has given a 23 years old serial two life terms plus 84 years in prison on numerous counts of rape and assault.

Athenkosi Matyaleni who was 19 years old at the time when he started committing these cruel crimes, first started with a 27 years old woman in December 2017 who was on her way from one garden to the other when Matyaleni grabbed and dragged her to the nearby bush where he threatened her with a knife ordering her to be quite.

Three weeks later a 38 years old woman who was accompanied by her cousin to her boyfriend also fell victim to Matyaleni’s evil deeds where he slapped the cousin on the face with an empty bottle braking it on her face and ordered her to leave. He then dragged the victim to an empty shack and raped her multiple times before robbing her of her belongings.

Three months later he found an 11 years old young girl who was picking up wild fruits with her friends. She fell on the ground while running away with her friends.

Matyaleni then dragged her into the bushes holding a screwdriver on her neck and raped her multiple times.

Matyaleni’s evil acts where ended when he raped a 40 years old woman in May 2019 on her way home also with a screwdriver on her neck. Robbed her of her belongings and left.

The victim then followed him to his house and knocked on the door to confront him and she came back with police few days later.

State Prosecutor Adv Sharon Hendricks said there was is no way the should feel sorry for him and give minimum sentence, instead he be given a harsher sentence.

Presiding over the matter Judge Beshe said Matyaleni poses greater to the society outside and therefore he should be locked up and kept away from the society for the longest time.
