Mopani District Municipal employee falls victim to hijacking

Police have launched a manhunt for armed suspects involved in a carjacking incident that occurred in Dzumeri village on Tuesday, 21 May 2024.

Even though the hijacked vehicle was recovered the following day on Wednesday, 22 May 2024, near the Limpopo River in Tshamutumbu policing area, Vhembe District, the police are still looking for the suspects.

Preliminary reports indicate that at about 19:30, the male driver employed at Mopani District Municipality, and two passengers, drove to the local marketplace to enjoy a meal they have bought at the nearby food outlet.

Not long after arriving at the said place, they were suddenly accosted by three suspects who pointed them with firearms. The suspects robbed the victims of valuables that included cellphones, bank cards and an undisclosed amount of cash. The assailants then fled the scene with the victim’s Toyota Hilux bakkie GD6.

The victims were left unharmed.

The vehicle was seized by the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit for forensic evidence to assist in the ongoing investigations after recovering it.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has called on members of the public to assist with any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
