While Soweto soccer giants Kaizer Chiefs failed to finish the 2022/23 PSL season in the second position as planned, they still managed to scoop one of the biggest award from Yusuf Maart.
Maart walked away with goal of the season with a goal that also went on to be the game changer in the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on 29 October 2022, at FNB Stadium.
The midfielder Maart tried his luck from 60-yard shot inside his own half to be beat keeper Siyabongwa Mpontshane who most probably underestimated the ball.
Not only did the goal win the award, it was also voted DStv Goal of the Month for October last year and qualified as a finalist for the Goal of the Season.
Accepting the award, Maart said the goal wouldn’t have been possible without his teammates.
“For that goal, I really appreciate my teammates. It’s a team sport and, at the end of the day, without them, I would never have scored the goal. We defended as a team from the front and Khama told me earlier to check their goalkeeper standing off his line. A bit later Khama made a tackle and the ball went loose. I took the ball and looked up and thought to myself,’ Let me just take the risk and hit it’,” said the Atlantis-born midfielder.
Amakhosi finished the league in the fifth position with 44 points having lost 12 games, drawn 5 times and only won 13 of the 30.
