North West Department of Community Safety and Roads & Transports say they have recorded an equal number of road fatalities they recorded same period last year.
MEC Sello Lehari Spokesperson Oshebeng Koonyaditse said they have so far recorded nine lives lost since the 1st of April going into the long weekend.
“This is the same number of fatalities the Province has recorded for the same period last year. The only fatality recorded on the eve of Good Friday was recorded at 20:45 in Ikageng in Potchefstroom where a 12 year old boy was hit by car.”
“The enraged community members became aggressive towards the two occupants of the vehicle and torched their car. They were rescued by the law enforcement officers” said Koonyaditse.
“The other eight lives were lost in Taung in Mogopela village, three in Ledig near Mogwase and two in Lichtenburg. There is also a growing trend of pedestrian who are hit by vehicles and most of them seemingly coming from hostelries.”
MEC Lehari sent condolences to the bereaved families. The MEC appeals to pedestrians to be extra careful when crossing roads especially at night.
He called on law enforcement officers to do their job and not be lenient to those who insist on not respecting the laws on the roads and other people.
“Don’t be lenient on any deviancy but do so within the confines of the law. We want to reduce the fatalities by at least 25% as we reduced them by 21% during the Christmas holidays. We can do so by being visible on all arterial roads”, said MEC Lehari.
