Out with the old and in with the new in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) as they welcome in the new Speaker Colleen Makhubele from Cope.
Makhubele who went against the DA’s Alex Christians who received 129 votes, 12 behind Colleen Makhubele with 141.
Makhubele is set to replace Vasco da Gama who was removed via a motion of no confidence earlier this month. The motion was mainly supported by EFF and the ANC.
The City is currently ran through multi-party coalition led by the DA, it consists of ActionSA, Cope, FF+, IFP, PA, ACDP, UIM and ATM.
The DA-led multiparty coalition government has a total of 140 of 270 seats in council. Eleven members of the coalition government voted for Makhubele.
Several speculations suggests that the coalition talks and relationship started to collapse when the DA wanted to occupy all positions including most of the MMC positions.
It is said that Mayor Mpho Phalatse might be another one from the DA to bite the dust through motion of no confidence as well.
Makhubele has assured parties that she will lead the house with integrity and work with all parties in Council.
