The coronation of the new chief in the Bakgatla Ba Seabe Traditional house has brought fights and division within the Chaane family about the rightful heir to the throne following a commission report which was released saying predecessor Steve Makwe Chaane was not the rightful heir.

The fight between the parts representing the incumbent Chief Edward Phopolo Chaane and Steve Makwe Chaane ended up taking each other to court since 2014 to an extend where the then chief Makwe was barred from tribal offices and forced to continue with his duties from home just less than 40metres from the offices.
Speaking to the other part representing Makwe Chaane before the coronation, Frank Chaane said he is saddened by the recent developments and not happy with the crowning of the incumbent.
He said he suspects foul play by Mpumalanga Cogta because they have lodged a complaint against the continuation of the ceremony and to their understanding it was not supposed to continue because they were given 24 May 2022 court date.
In support of what Mr Frank Chaane said, Mme Peggy Kgokane added that she also thinks Mmametlhake SAPS is in cohorts with the reigning Chief and his council because they always take their side whenever they raise complaints of intimidation.
They called on law enforcement agencies and government to do its job and not take sides.
Mpumalanga Cogta MEC Busisiwe Shiba said as it stands according to their investigations they are satisfied that E.P Chaane is the rightful heir of Bakgatla Ba Seabe.
