A case against a man who defrauded the South African Revenue Services (SARS) of almost R 1miilion has been postponed to August 29th.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said that it is alleged that the 44 years old Themba Jordan Shakoane was employed by Transnet in 2017 at the time when allegedly committed this crime together with a tax consultant.
“During January 2017, Mr Themba Jordan Shakoane was employed by Transnet in Nelspruit. It is alleged that the accused was the intermediary who recruited runners as well as co-workers and lured them to commit tax fraud.”
“The recruits were promised tax refunds if their tax returns were submitted through e-filing by Mr Mphephu, a Tax Consultant.”
“The Tax Consultant allegedly submitted fraudulent claims and false information which generated tax refunds on behalf of the recruited taxpayers.”
Unfortunately for them, they were nabbed and Mr Mphephu made his first court appearance at Witbank Magistrate Court in December 2022.
Shakoane was only arrested on August 26th, 2023 by the Hawks Middelburg based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and was released on R 1500 bail by the Witbank Magistrate Court after his first appearance.
The matter is set to be transferred to Middelburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court for both accused.
It is said that SARS lost R 969 000 due to this criminal act.
