The Middelburg Regional Court has handed down a 15 years imprisonment for two Mozambicans, who are father and son after being found in possession of rhino horns and for attempting to bribe officials.

Hawks Spokesperson in Mpumalanga Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said that the pair who are both named Alberto Ernesto Nharreluga were travelling on the N4 in Nelspruit when they were stopped by the Middelburg Flying Squad members.

Upon searching of their vehicle, rhino horns and shark fin were found and they arrested on the spot.

Seeing that the odds were against them, they attempted to give the officials R 20 000 for their release. Their attempted bribery was added to their charge and they had been in police custody since their arrest in April 20, 2019.

They were sentenced to six years for possession of rhino horns, five years for corruption and three years for possession of a shark fin.
